Daithí Ó hÉighnigh

Daithí has been Freediving since 2017 and was certified as an AIDA Freediving Instructor in January 2021.

Daithí has been fascinated by water for as long as he can remember and can easily spend hours enraptured by the flow and formless receptivity of the life-sustaining element. His father was a fisherman so the sea became a familiar place for him as a youngster. In 1997, Daithí graduated from UCD with a Masters Degree in Water Engineering, specialising in hydrology.

Daithí qualified as a yoga teacher in 2017 and following a trip to the Gili Islands (Bali) where Daithí experienced scuba diving for the first time, a kindred spirit reminded him of the practice of Freediving which Daithí, like many others, had learned about in the early 90’s from the French movie “Le Grand Bleu”. Daithí's first Freediving experience was with Apnista in Amed (Bali) in 2017 and he has been hooked ever since. “I remember it felt like I had finally learned how to communicate with water, there was definitely a two-way exchange.”

Fascinated by psychology and the treatment of trauma, Daithí qualified as an Art Psychotherapist in 2019. He is deeply interested in spiritual healing and practices various forms of breathwork including pranayama and holotropic. Daithí's relationship with Freediving has been an integrative and healing experience and he loves to share the practice with others.

For Daithí, Freediving is the fullest expression of who he is and what he loves most. “I love how I need to draw on pretty much everything I've learned in this life to Freedive and when I'm not fully present, respecting the power of the practice, the water lets me know straight away. It's a very deep privilege to be able share this practice with others.”
